April 22, 2019: After a 5-year hiatus [GfW46 was released on 2014-03-21], Goldfish Warning! Episode 47 is now almost ready to release! The exact status is like this: the episode was fully translated, edited, timed, almost fully typeset (except the voice-actor credits in ED are still missing), almost fully QCed (except there are 5 or 6 lines that are not finalized). A release candidate (RC3) should be ready within a few days, and after final checking, maybe that file will be actually released. If QCers want to change anything in RC3, we are going to have to make RC4, but that will only take a few days, just changing a few words in the script. So GfW47 will be probably released at the end of April or the beginning of May.
PS (April 22, 22:51 UTC): The script has been finalized. Now, the only remaining things to do are: 1) ED Credits, 2) a few, additional sign subs, 3) encode/mux, 4) final checking, and 5) release it. Most probably we can release GfW47 soon, and perhaps we can continue (restart) GfW after all!
April 23, 2019: GfW47 RC3 is ready (encoded and muxed). This may or may not become the final version that we will release. Anyway we should be able to release 47 real soon, within a week or so, unless a huge comet hits the Earth :D
April 26, 2019: We’re doing RC4 after all. This should be the final version.
April 29, 2019: RC4 has been encoded. There is a more than 50% chance that this file will be the final version and will be released in a few days.
PS (April 29, 14:15 UTC): We’re going to have to re-encode RC4 for some technical reason; a one- or two-day delay is expected. The release date will be in early May.
May 1, 2019: RC5 has been encoded. There is a more than 90% chance that this file will be released in a few days.
May 3, 2019: While final-checking, a typo and a grammatical error were found in RC5 (“belive” for believe, etc.). We’re going to have to fix them, and so the release will be slightly delayed.
PS (May 3, 22:12 UTC): The problems have been fixed!
May 4, 2019 (20:20 UTC): We have released Goldfish Warning! 47. This episode has a few interesting aspects. You can read Translator’s Notes after you watch it!
BPS tag for a Vorbis trackBPS tags for Eps. 38–46 (non-standard) and for Eps. 47–54 (standard-compliant)Starting from Goldfish Warning!, Episode 38, our MKV files have BPS (bit-per-second) tags for audio tracks. In the old MKV files for Eps. 38–46, the value of BPS is based on the source file size. For example, let’s say the audio file vorbis.ogg (to be muxed into an MKV) is 15,199,187 bytes (= 15,199,187 × 8 bits) in size and 1448.447 seconds in length, then the file-size-based bitrate is 15,199,187 × 8 / 1448.447 ≈ 83947 [bits/sec] and so our BPS tag would have said 83947. OggEnc also reports Average bitrate: 83.9 kb/s in this case.
![[PNG File]](oggenc2_bitrate.png)
However, according to the official Tag Specifications of matroska.org, the tag BPS is defined as the average bits per second excluding “headers and any container overhead.” As such, a simple calculation like above is not standard-compliant, because the size of an Ogg Vorbis file includes the overhead of the Ogg container, in addition to the actual (“raw”) audio data. Moreover, after our release of Ep. 46 (in March, 2014), mkvmerge was updated (in May, 2014) and now it automatically writes BPS tags (whose values should be more correct, as mkvmerge is an official tool coded by one of the main Matroska devs).
Therefore, in the new MKV file Goldfish Warning! (DVD x264) - 47 [h-b] (190503A6).mkv, the audio track has a standard-compliant BPS tag. In the above example, the BPS value automatically written by mkvmerge is 82847 (≈ 82.8 kb/s), instead of 83947 (≈ 83.9 kb/s). In other words, the audio bitrate value in BPS now looks slightly smaller than what is commonly called “bitrate” — the meaning of BPS is now different from that of the BPS tags in our old MKV files.
BPS_OGG added in Ep. 47Just in case someone needs it, the backward-compatible (non-standard) value 83947 — the bitrate based on the Ogg Vorbis file size — has also been stored in the same MKV file, as a newly-added custom tag BPS_OGG for the audio track.

September 12, 2019: GfW48 = QC this weekend; more than 50% chance of September release. All in all, it seems that 2019 is going to be our most productive year in the recent seven years (2013–19).
September 18, 2019: GfW48 = test-encoded; so far QCed by 2 of the 3 QCers and about 10 minor editing problems have been found. To be re-encoded shortly.
October 3, 2019: GfW48 = encoded; waiting for QC; once QCed, the rest should be fast.
November 17, 2019: We are understaffed.
November 28, 2019: GfW48 was re-encoded (RC2). Gyu08 has been QCed and now to be re-edited. There were about 20 lines to be fixed (updated). We may be able to release these two eps in December. Two persons emailed us saying they might help us. In the best-case scenario, we can release things faster. However, we may have to focus on Gyu, not doing GfW/HCR for the time being, if we don’t have editors/QCers who are not too busy. If, on the other hand, a solid, motivated editor(s) join us, we may be able to do more things (e.g. GfW Movie, or even something not yet subbed at all like from 1990s). If you love old anime such as GfW and you think you can work with us, email us.
December 11, 2019: The current GfW/HCR editor is back! Hopefully we can start QCing GfW RC2 tonight or tomorrow (UTC); there is hope that we can continue GfW/HCR. Perhaps chances are fifty-fifty (if 5 releases/yr, we’ll still need a few more years to complete GfW/HCR, and only God knows what might happen in a few years).
December 15, 2019: Good news! A new translator-editor has joined us. She is a person who wrote scripts before for Hikari no Kiseki for Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san. Amazing. She QCed GfW48 RC2 yesterday morning (UTC), and RC3 (possibly final) is now half-ready script-wise. If the editor in charge has enough free time, we can release GfW48 this month (still iffy). Also, she is willing to translate the next episode (GfW49); the release ETA of GfW49 is perhaps January or February of 2020 (big IFFY).
December 18, 2019: GfW48 RC3 was test-encoded, now to be QCed. I hope we can release it next week.
December 23, 2019: We finalized the GfW48 RC4 script with Kaze, the new translator-editor, and a new MKV file was created. I hope we can release it this week.
December 30, 2019: So far one release-blocking issue and several possible issues have been found in GfW48 RC4. The current editor is also double-checking everything. We’ll have to re-edit it and re-encode RC5. Chances are, we can release it shortly but probably not in this month.
January 8, 2020: One typo was found in GfW48 RC5 (a regression in RC4), and was already fixed in RC6. Probably we will release this in a few days, possibly tomorrow night (UTC).
January 13, 2020 (00:23 UTC): We have released Goldfish Warning! 48.

The joke is, Chitose’s mom says she “just got back from Switzerland,” yet for some reason
she brings back “a specialty of Nagoya” as a souvenir — her story doesn’t add up.
Uirō is a sweet cake made of rice flour, indeed a specialty of Nagoya, though fried-shrimp flavored uirō is unrealistic.
As an additional joke, ebifurai (“fried shrimp”) is written as ebifuryā in a (fake) Nagoya accent:
“Japanese comedian Tamori once joked about Nagoya dialect such as ebifuryaa […],”
“but restaurateurs in Nagoya took advantage of the joke and ebifurai became one of Nagoya's specialty foods.”

February 8, 2020: Goldfish Warning! (GfW) Episode 50 will probably become ready to release this month. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Episode 49 has not yet been translated at all. This happened because the two episodes were assigned to different translators and, as it turned out, the translator for 50 is faster and much more motivated [Ep 51 has been already trasnalted too!] while the translator for 49 is a busy person. Nevertheless, chances are Ep 49 will be ready in March, and we can still maintain the average release speed of about 1 GfW Ep per month — which is good enough for honobono, especially considering that a few months ago we were not even sure if we could continue GfW. (PS: GfW49 was reassigned to a different translator on February 9, 2020.)
February 18, 2020: GfW49 has been translated. Since GfW50 is already semi-ready and GfW51 has been translated too, we should be able to release a few GfW episodes one after another, relatively quickly — quickly for honobono, that is. GfW1 was released 15 years ago in 2005 — that’s so ridiculous it’s almost impressive!
March 2, 2020: Goldfish Warning! (GfW) Episode 49 “Beware of the School Newspaper / Bad Ox Becomes Good” was typeset and test-encoded as RC1. Though the script (translated text) was created two weeks ago (Feb 18), typesetting took two weeks because the episode has a lot of on-screen text, including four different newspaper pages. This may be the hardest GfW episode to typeset. Anyway, the GfW project is now progressing steadily, faster than before: Episodes 49, 50, 51 are all more or less ready. We are now more active because a new member, Kaze, joined us in December, 2019; and also Hoshikuzu came back in January, 2020.
March 11, 2020: Recently, in both GfW and Gyu, translation is relatively fast (which is good) but editing/checking/updating is still slow. Both GfW49 and 50 have been carefully QCed by multiple QCers. While most lines are already accurate meaning-wise, we can rephrase some of them so that they may sound better. There are several good suggestions in the QC memos, and hopefully GfW49 (RC2) will be ready this coming weekend or around Monday (Mar 16), based on those suggestions. The good news is, the hardest part is already over — namely, translating/typesetting the on-screen newspaper pages in Episode 49.
March 16, 2020: GfW49 (RC2) is half ready. There are still a few things to be decided.
March 18, 2020: GfW49 (RC2) was encoded.
March 25, 2020: GfW49 (RC3) was encoded, near (if not) the final; 11 lines revised since RC2.
March 29, 2020: GfW49 (RC3) was re-encoded with one additional revision (just one comma).
April 2, 2020: GfW49 and 50, especially 49, are practically ready to release. However, the person who usually does final-checking and releasing (rctgamer3) is currently being MIA [PS: he’s just busy irl].
[April 11, 2020: The “SHRIMP incident” occurred. After suspending the GfW49 project for two weeks, one of the QCers started saying he didn’t like the positioning of the “FRIED SHRIMP” sign (hardsubbed around 11:34). GfW49 was delayed by another week (so, by three weeks in total) to update this tiny, unimportant sign. This is kind of funny in retrospect, but was a bit stressful at that time.]
April 19, 2020: Finally GfW49 (RC4) has been encoded, with about five minor revisions in the softsub part and one minor tweak [“FRIED SHRIMP”] in the hardsub part. Maybe this is final and will be released shortly. Maybe not. We’ll see.
April 30, 2020: A release-blocking problem was found in GfW49 RC4 [“-san” was missing in one place], and RC5 was created. Then the translator made a few minor revisions, and RC6 was created. Currently we can release files only on weekends, as rctgamer3 doesn’t have time on weekdays. So we’re planning to release GfW49 this weekend (May 2 or May 3) with a few minor tweaks to RC6 (i.e. RC7 will be the final). Sorry this is taking so long.
May 1, 2020: GfW49 RC7 was created. We have broken our record for release candidates (RCs) — we sometimes make RC6, but have never gone to RC7 before! (In case you’re wondering what kind of revisions we are making in each RC, here’s gfw49-rc3rc7diff.txt.) We’re planning to release GfW49 tomorrow (May 2) around noon UTC.
May 2, 2020 (19:47 UTC): Finally we have released Goldfish Warning! 49. Currently, the general situation is like this: Goldfish Warning! is being actively translated, typeset, encoded, QCed, and edited. However, one of the regular QCers is very busy, and as such, if we have to wait for his approval, things could be delayed indefinitely. That’s one of the main reasons why GfW49 was delayed. Also, that’s why GfW50 is being delayed even though it’s already RC3.

2020-07-05 GfW50 Released
May 10, 2020: GfW50 RC3 was already QCed and the script is to be updated.
May 16, 2020: GfW50 RC4 was encoded yesterday. This one is near-final, if not the final, and the release ETA of GfW50 is within 10–14 days (perhaps the next weekend or the weekend after that), after final-checking and, if needed, final-tweaking.
May 27, 2020: The next release is probably GfW50 (RC5): now RC4 is being checked and a few minor revisions are planned.
June 2, 2020: About 20 minor script changes were made today, and we are ready to finalize GfW50. GfW50 (RC5) was test-encoded on May 30. So far GfW50 is looking almost ready to release, except there are one or two unimportant problems. The potentially bad news is that our internal SFTP server is down (not this server where our website is hosted), meaning now we can’t easily share files among ourselves. Obviously this is inconvenient. But probably we can somehow release GfW50 anyway. The current ETA is 4–10 days. [PS: The server is up again.]
June 12, 2020: We are not yet ready to release GfW50 (RC6 prepared on June 6 is almost-final but not quite). After final-checking, there is at least one line we want to change (though it’s rather minor), and we need some more time (at least a few days, perhaps one or two weeks), as the editor wants to double-check everything. Meanwhile, we can work on other episodes.
June 24, 2020: GfW50 RC6 was encoded on June 6 [and GfW50 RC7 was encoded on June 19], but it’s not ready: there was one minor edit on June 9, and after final-checking the editor made 5 more changes on June 16; then one very minor change was made on June 18; finally two more lines were questioned on June 18 — still TBD [PS: on June 26, these two lines were judged as okay as-is after all]. We are getting a little too paranoid!
